Whirlpool Strikes Deal to Expand its Appliance Sales in China. Cor-Jus Enterprises has found that Whirlpool Corp. has struck a sales and distribution alliance with a leading Chinese retailer. It is Whirlpool’s hope that it can move into this potentially massive market and to truely stake its claim to being the world’s large manafacturer of major appliances.
Under the agreement reached last Spring with Suning Appliance Co., Whirlpool will get “preferential access” to 1,700 Suning retail stores in 300 major cities throughout China. Suning also gets exclusive rights to sell Whirlpool washers and refridgerators amoung electronic superstores throughout the country. In return, Whirlpool will use Suning’s already existing distribution system to provide its appliances to stores in smaller cities where Suning has no stores.
This partnership has enabled Whirlpool to fully enter China as a major player, overcoming their initial problems they encountered in 1995. By partnering with Chinese based electronics firm, Hisense-Kelon Electronic Holdings Co. they now can produce appliances designed to tastes in China.
